Stability and Smooth Ride
A heavier frame is more stable and will make the motion feel more fluid. A lighter frame will result in more shakiness that is interpreted by your body as unstable and thus uncomfortable. If a machine is uncomfortable, you will eventually not use it regularly.

Workout Features
Programs are very important to your getting the most out of your workout on an elliptical. Choose a machine with both pre-set and heart rate interactive programs. Adjustable stride is becoming more commonly available today. This feature is worthy of consideration for everyone regardless of a person’s height, weight or activity level. An adjustable stride gives you variety. Variety can be the factor that helps you stick with your program. Keep in mind that the user controls the speed on the elliptical machine. The speed you go (RPMs – revolutions per minute) also contributes to the overall intensity. Pedal spacing is the space between the foot pedals on the machine. Your feet will naturally move toward each other as you speed up. Wide pedal spacing will make you feel as if you are straddling something, especially at higher speeds and for shorter individuals, ultimately contributing to hip, knee and/or lower back discomfort.

Noise and Space
Elliptical machines are naturally very quiet. Some designs have wheels that roll in tracks that will make some noise. This can be minimized by regularly cleaning of the rollers and rails. This routine maintenance will also extend the life of the machine. Some of the electronic stride adjustments may make noise during the adjustment. Most elliptical machines have a foot-print of roughly 24” x 72”.

Drive System
Since the user provides the power to the motion of the elliptical, there is no powered drive system. There is, however, a resistance mechanism. Resistance is caused by an electro-magnetic brake mechanism and is referred to as magnetic resistance. This same technology has been in use for many years with stationary cycles and is very durable and reliable. The unique aspect of an elliptical is the way in which it creates the elliptical motion and is often referred to as the ‘drive system’. There are 3 ‘drive system’ choices, front, rear or center-drive. Each has its own distinct benefits. So far, none has proven necessarily better than another so the choice is personal preference. The key is how the machine feels to you. The center drive machines tend to have the smallest footprint.
